Cesar Manrique was born at Arrecife in 1919, studied art in Madrid, fought in the Civil war and rose to fame in America. Returning to his beloved Island, he was a leading figure in the movement to save Lanzarote from the tourist devastations that had taken place in Tenerife and Gran Canaria. These pages of The Manrique Foundation, Jameos del Agua, Mirador del Rio and The Cactus Garden are just some of his major works within a philosophy of building with respect to the environment. He died in a road accident in 1992.
